China’s web filter plans clarified.
Protesters in China have forced the government to confirm whether net-filtering is to be used on every new pc purchased in the country.
As from July this year, every computer sold in China was to be supplied with web filtering software called “the Green Dam Youth Escort”.
This software has been created to stop users looking at offensive material such as violent websites and pornography. But users in China are not happy about the situation and legal action together with criticism from other countries has forced China to make a statement regarding the software.
A Chinese official has insisted that this software is NOT compulsory. An official from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and information technology also confirmed that the Green Dam software can actually be uninstalled, and that no one would face prosecution should they choose to do so.
It is also understood that many pc hardware manufacturers were refusing to install the software on their pc’s
